Adult ADHD Treatment
When the topic of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is discussed, it often is in relationship to children. But adults can suffer from ADHD as well – chances are good it was there all along, they just weren’t tested for it. Fortunately, there is effective adult ADHD treatment available.
Some of the signs of adult ADHD include:
- Problems with paying attention
- Trouble controlling impulses
- Difficulty staying organized
Of course, it’s important to stress that these are behaviors that can be associated with many issues, situations, and personalities, so they do NOT conclusively indicate ADHD nor suggest by themselves the need adult ADHD treatment. However, if any of these present a significant challenge and there are other signs that may suggest the disorder, testing might be recommended.
Drugs are the prevalent treatment for ADHD in both children and adults; however, non-medical talk therapy is used in conjunction with drugs that can help significantly. The right medicine, along with a good therapist, is a powerful combination. Talk therapy can help you and your family members learn more about how ADHD works and how to better deal with the problems it can create.
Two common types of talk therapy used for adult ADHD treatment are:
Cognitive behavioral therapy: You learn to change your thoughts and actions in a way that gives you more control over your life. CBT helps you see how negative thoughts create obstacles in your life. You learn to replace false beliefs with true ones. A positive outlook makes it easier to do the things you want and need to do. This creates a cycle where you’re happier, feel better about yourself, and get more done.
Marriage counseling and family therapy: You and your family members learn how to communicate better and spot patterns that may cause issues. The counseling can help loved ones understand that the problems aren’t simply about your being messy or forgetful.
